In 1934, eighty-eight acres of parkland was donated to the state park system by Jacob and Henry Babler in memory of their brother, Dr. Edmund A. Babler, a St. Louis surgeon. Eight hundred additional acres were added to those acres and Babler Memorial State Park was born. The Civilian Conservation Corps, a WPA program during the Great Depression, was used to build many of the stone structures that are still in the park, including the entrance gateway, using stone quarried from the area. Twenty-two of those structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
